Wait a Minute; It’s Still Twenty-Four Hours in a Day.

Have you ever felt that you were running on a treadmill at full speed with the key to turning it off in your hand; but you were trying to juggle all of the pins that were flying at you from all sides, and couldn’t let go long enough to turn the key?

I have.

It sounds like something out of a cartoon, but isn’t that what we do just about every day of our lives? The treadmill represents life, and realize there are twenty-four hours in every day, of every month, of every year, that we are on this planet. It doesn’t speed up or slow down; it is always steadily ticking one second at a time, and no matter how busy we become; we can make wise choices to pace our lives in time with God’s purpose for us. This may require waiting for the Lord to prepare the path before us, so that he can protect us from losing our way.

Naturally, this sounds like an awesome plan to me. So, please tell me why in the world would I want to run any faster ahead of where God has already cleared the way? I’m the one who keeps frantically pushing the speed control button to get to the promise, faster.

There’s usually a problem when I become impatient. God hasn’t completely cleared the path; so,while I am stressing out and running to full capacity, people are throwing pins through the air for me to catch and juggle.

You know, all of those gigantic problems that obviously nobody can solve but us. So we take one and deal with it; then, another one gets added; and the first one still isn’t resolved; so instead of tossing it into God’s hands, in prayer, we add a third one and hope that by the time it gets back in our hands we will be able to deal with it; then, you guessed it, we are more than likely still trying to get off of the treadmill, as we keep catching more and more pins.

It may sound hopeless at this point, but I have found the key to the treadmill: drop the pins and push the button. Just raise your hands and give it to God. Sure, the pins will fall to the floor; something might not get accomplished; put it in God’s hands.

It’s time to back up to where we started adding speed to our pace on the treadmill of life, and turn it off. No matter how fast you go through your day, you will still have twenty-four hours; so it’s not worth getting ahead of God’s purpose for your life. He can juggle the pins for a while, and you can rest at his feet, as you wait on him to make the way. Let his will unfold in your life, today.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

He Promises us Strength if we Wait

Flashback to Valentine’s Day at Nine.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee” (Psalm 51:10-13).

I remember Valentine’s Day when I was nine. At home, mom would buy us each a box of Valentines, and we would spend hours sitting at the kitchen table carefully selecting one for each student in our class. For the whole week leading up to Valentine’s Day, it seemed that everyone was just a little bit nicer, because how could you not be nice to others? After all, the nicer you were, the more Valentines you would receive.

Every day, our eyes were drawn to the folders that were stapled on the board; as the week wore on, our bounty increased. By Friday, we could take down the folders filled with candy hearts, cards with cute sayings, and chocolate. It was a treasure chest for a nine year old with very little in the way of material things.

Many years have passed since that time in my life as a nine year old, but I still remember how much hope that week prior to the big day brought me. It is a hope that transcends time. If God were to give us the perfect gift, think about what it would be like? We don’t have to think about it, because he already has given us the perfect gift: salvation.

Hearts are sometimes broken; and not all hearts can withstand the trials of this life, but the Lord promises to make us new hearts, if we are willing to receive it. Are you willing to make a fresh start?

God is Still in Control.

“O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 107:1).

“Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107:8).

“And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing” (Psalm 107:22).

Don’t think for a minute that the Lord is anxious and fretful about world events. He is not. We must go through the journey that the Lord has given for us to take. Sometimes the journey may lead us down unfamiliar paths that may not have all of the provisions we think we need, readily available; however, even then, God is still in control of your circumstance.

For more times than I care to count, I lose sleep trying to plan out my life. I always think, if I do this, then God will do that, or my mind doesn’t stop thinking.

The Lord has called us to pray, and he has called us to rest. If we neglect doing either one of these two, our lives will get out of balance, and it will take us twice as long to complete simple tasks. I can put my whole confidence in Jesus Christ. because he has already paid the ultimate price for my salvation.

I can rest, because I know that he is not forsaking me on my journey, but he is taking me on my journey to prepare me to receive the blessing that he has prepared just for me. If God released his blessings too soon, we may not be adequately prepared to receive it, so it is best to learn what we need to learn, and then, we will be more than ready when he brings it to pass, and fulfills his will for our lives.

Before I turned my life over to God, I was keenly aware of the risks that I was taking with my soul. I was raised in the church; although I was the only one who attended for a long time. As a product of the bus ministry, I was hungry for the Lord, and to be saved. It would be years before I found the truth of Jesus Christ, but during the time I was growing up, I never stopped searching for something more. When I gave up control of my circumstances, and turned my life over to Jesus Christ, I found a peace that passes all understanding, and life.

Make Prayer your first Choice

Fear not

What better way to make it through life, than to trust God to give us strength and help. He said he was with us, so he knows the troubles we sometimes endure in our Christian walk. It is the same as many other people endure, because it is called life.

I know with confidence that without God in my life, I could not handle all the trials that I may be called to go through in a lifetime; yet, he promises to uphold us. I don’t know about you, but I’m glad that the Lord is on my side fighting battles on my behalf. I welcome his presence in my life. Not everyone will agree with me, but that is okay, because I know what the Lord has brought me through; I know the victory I feel in my heart every time I take my next breath. I am so blessed to have a God who cares about me.

For so long in my life, I really didn’t put my faith in anyone or anything. As I have grown older, I realize that it’s time to take down the self-inflicted barriers and allow the Lord to work on my behalf.

I love the Lord; he is precious to me. I may not know how it will all work out, but as long as I keep trusting, it will work out, because God can’t lie. “All is well” no matter what circumstances I am called to face. All is well, because he lives.

Do Nothing, or Do Exploits? –The Choice is Yours.

I must recognize that without God, I can do nothing; with God I can do exploits.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothingIf a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples” (John 15:5-8).

Who are we to have such great plans in place for our future, yet leave God completely out of the picture?

The word clearly says that we won’t be fruitful without God, so tell me, why is it that so many people today, forget to follow Christ? To tell you the truth, I want my efforts to be successful. I don’t want to pour my heart and soul into something that I think is worthy, only to find that it will utterly fail, because I didn’t include God in my plans.

I tried following my own path, and would probably be on the same miserable path of loneliness and despair, if it were not for the grace and mercy of God.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

You can’t see spirit; it is like the wind. You can feel the wind, see the leaves move if the wind is blowing, and maybe even hear the sound of it as it moves through the atmosphere, but you can not see it. In a dust storm, all you are seeing is the dust, but not the wind that is moving it.

After sin entered the world, it created a separation between man and God that needed to be bridged. So God manifest himself in flesh to make a way for us to be redeemed.

11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:11-14).

Jesus gave himself for us to redeem us; for that I am thankful.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed , and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. (Psalm 46:1-3).

Do Nothing, or Do Exploits? The Choice is Yours.

It took great sacrifice for us to have salvation. What are you going to do with this gift? Doing nothing is never the answer. My daddy had a saying, “Can’t never could do nothing.” There’s a whole lot of truth in that statement. You’ll never know unless you step out in faith what you are capable of doing, but it is guaranteed that without God you can’t do anything.

32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

I choose to know God. There are still some mountains to climb, and I want to have the Lord on my side to help me as I keep moving forward in faith.

Stand for Truth Even if it Isn’t Popular Among Your Friends

As a teenager, being popular was important. Having friends was important. Standing for Truth and Jesus Christ was a sure way to face isolation and ridicule. You looked different, had a pure and wholesome sense of right and wrong, and upheld values and standards that surpassed and threatened those who would not choose to live up to your standard. It made you separate, peculiar, and ensured that so called friends would become jealous of how good you were. How many times I heard, “you are too goody, goody, to hang out with my crowd.” Rejection is difficult to swallow when you are young; however, you can’t live on your mother’s or father’s convictions or lack of convictions: you must live for God for yourself.

My older sister remembered a time when she had to stand after leaving a church service where Mama had just received the baptism of the Holy Ghost:

The only time I remember going to church with mom and Gracie was to a holiness church. Mom and I and my baby sister, Gracie, who was not walking yet, walked to church. It was white wood, wonderful church. It had a wood floor, dull paint, certainly nothing fancy, I think what impressed me the most about this wonderful place was how happy everyone was. They sang praise songs; they raised their hands, and cried and loved this same Jesus that had helped us. I still didn’t know why Jesus was great. I always felt good, happy and light when I went to this church, but who was and where was this Jesus?

One night my mom went to the altar. I went with her. My sister, Gracie, was asleep. Mom got on her knees raised her hands and she was crying and smiling at the same time. I just stared at her. I remember thinking mom looks like a Christmas light. She is shining. I now know it was the glory and anointing of Jesus on Mom. He touched her that night. I now knew that this wonderful person called Jesus, is the only begotten son of God, and it was his wonderful spirit I saw all over mama.

One day a ferocious dog tried to stop us from going to church. Gracie was sleeping in the stroller, Mama was running after a stick, and I (Jerry) faced the dog eyeball to eyeball till he left. Ha! Ha!

Sometimes you took action by “running after a big stick,” and sometimes the best thing you could do was stand and “face the dog eyeball to eyeball till he left.”

It all depends on the situation. As a Christian, we face situations that are totally beyond our control. There is no reason to hide in fear. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of peace and a sound mind. We all know that living in the 21st century requires having a determination to stand for Truth. Not everyone will understand your fierce passion to do the will of God in your life; but if you have walked with the Lord through treacherous waters, and are still able to stand, then, it doesn’t matter if people approve of your choices to dedicate your life to serving, Jesus Christ, the only one who can save us from utter destruction. You know that he is the right choice for your life.

I am thankful that we live in a free nation; and I pray that we don’t take our freedoms for granted. The time is short to do the will of the Father.

I remember growing up in a home where going to church meant risking being shot before walking the short distance to a church van.

The Lord always intervened on my behalf, because as I was walking, I was also praying for my daddy to turn his life over to God. My childhood dream was his salvation, and a family that arrived to church on a Sunday, together to worship; but even though God didn’t fix my situation, at the time, he always managed to cause my daddy to pass out on the porch with the loaded gun across his chest, before I came back home from Sunday School.

By the time he woke up, he had forgotten why he was even on the porch in the first place. Was I afraid? Sometimes, but my love for a relationship with Jesus Christ was so much stronger than possibly facing death, so I was compelled to live for God. I knew that the only way to survive this life was to keep on standing on what I believed.

Why wouldn’t I desire to choose someone who is loyal to me? How could I deny my only hope?

People make lame excuses for not acknowledging that God even exists, and I wonder how much it grieves the Lord to see how his ultimate sacrifice of himself is being trampled by those who deny him; yet, he still loves them, unconditionally, enough to lay down his life for them. We have a free will to choose how we will live our life; nevertheless, one day, “every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

I will choose to Stand.

Obey my Voice and I’ll be your God

Commit yourself and all that you have to God.

Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. –Proverbs 16:3.

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Matthew 22:37

But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Proverbs 3:5-8

Too often people hold on too tightly to material possessions. Those things that may even be expensive, but what value do things really hold if having them causes us to lose our relationship with the Lord? Ask yourself, has the things of this world been allowed to cloud your vision to the heartbeat of God?

I must check myself at times so that I don’t get too caught up in entertainment and the cares of this life, that I forget my ultimate purpose which is to do the will of God.

It’s easy to keep my calendar filled: I can stay busy doing the work that is all important in my eyes, and neglect to build on the rock of my salvation through prayer, and worship. Instead of sitting at his feet and in his presence like Mary did, I can easily develop a Martha spirit of busyness if I don’t “Watch and pray.”

It never fails to amaze me that sometimes fervent prayers go forth for saints who are in desperate need of secure jobs, for example, and then God answers their prayer, only for them to later use the jobs the Lord provided as an excuse to miss church.

Enough about what I have observed about others. What about myself? How do you see me, Lord?

If I want to have my best year in 2015, am I willing to Commit myself and all that I have to you? I don’t take that question lightly. I know what it is like to not be committed to something. I know how lost I felt when my efforts were meaningless and unfruitful because I didn’t saturate my dreams with prayer and fasting. There’s so much that I desire to accomplish in this new year. The past is past, but thankfully you have wiped the slate clean, and my past doesn’t have to determine my future, if I will focus on your will and your way. I know that you have provided for me a lighted path, and it’s only when I look to the left or right that maybe I miss a step. Thank you Lord, for continually guiding me in the direction that you have chosen for me.

I want my thoughts established this year. I want to have confidence in the Lord. There is enough confusion in the world, and all we need to do is read the news to become anxious; but God has promised us that he will establish our thoughts if we commit our works to him. We can have peace even when it seems that everybody is causing chaos around us, because we have our minds set on the Lord.

We must build upon a firm foundation.

Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise” (Isaiah 60:18).

Walls of Salvation; Gates of Praise

7 Steps to Make 2015 Your Best Year

  1. Commit yourself and all that you have to God.
  2. Stand for truth even if it isn’t popular among your friends.

  3. Recognize that without God, we can do nothing; with God we can do exploits.

  4. Listen to his voice and shut out all the voices of doubt, unbelief, and self-condemnation.

  5. Walk by faith and not by sight. The world looks bleak at times but we rise above it.

  6. Have faith in God who is the author and the finisher of our faith. He knows the plans that he has for us.

  7. Learn to be still in the midst of the storm. Find a peace that passes all understanding by obeying the Lord’s command to, “Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10.

If the Lord chooses not to remove the trial, he will be there and give you wisdom to endure the trial as you go through it. We are tried by fire, but be of good cheer, because when we come out of the fire, we will be purest gold and even more fit for the Master’s use. Let’s give God our best efforts this year, and he will give us his best because of our commitment to trust him.

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,000 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 17 trips to carry that many people.

Forgetting the Past; I Press Toward the Mark

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14).

It’s time to forget about those things that we failed to accomplish in this past year, and resolve to keep working to complete unfinished tasks in the new year. We can look back at 2014 and feel defeated because we didn’t see fruit from our labors, or we can look at 2014 as the year that the Lord encouraged us to prepare the soil, and water the fields. That tells me to get ready, because 2015 is our year to see the harvest of souls. While we often felt that our labor was in vain, it is good to know that God did not forsake us; he has taken great care to prepare us to receive the blessing that we will not be able to contain.

He is not slack concerning his promises, and one thing that he promised is that he would never leave us or forsake us.

This year has been challenging for many people, but our prayers have been heard; our tears are stored in vials in heaven, and the Lord is getting ready to move the mountains that have become obstacles in our path. We will not hide; we will stand in the name of Jesus Christ, and pick up our spiritual weapons and claim the victory that has already been won.

I dare say that we all have those nagging things that we wish we could have handled better, but as Paul tells us in Philippians, “forget those things that are behind.”

Satan would like nothing better than for us to dwell on our past mistakes, and not focus on the coming year, because he knows that even after he has attacked us in so many ways; through health, finances, heartaches, and disappointments in the past year; we will still win if we keep pressing toward the mark. We are so close to the Lord’s return, that satan will try everything in his limited powers to dissuade us from reaping the victories that are already ours.

If we could see the coming year as the Lord sees it, we wouldn’t want to stay weeping over past failures; we would be charging forward with a shout and a victory dance as we see our enemies fall under our feet.

Don’t lose hope if you have struggled in the past year, because the Lord has not forgotten you.

He tells us in John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit–fruit that will last–and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” Whatsoever we ask; he will do it, and I for one, believe in that promise.
